A MYSTERY benefactor has given Anglicare $20,000 to start its $100,000 appeal for North-East Victoria and Albury.
The anonymous gift was revealed yesterday when Anglicare Victoria’s chief executive, Dr Ray Cleary, formally opened the agency’s new regional office at Ely Street, Wangaratta and launched the “Bishop’s Appeal” for Wangaratta diocese.
Bishop-elect John Parkes was present but he did not launch the appeal himself as he won’t be installed until Saturday week.
“Anglicare’s work is absolutely a core mission,” Bishop Parkes said later.
“We have no right to preach about caring for the poor if we don’t care for them.”
He praised the six staff and volunteers led by community development manager Suzie Don Leonard, who offer help from emergency relief to financial counselling and direct aid to rural families.
About 200 rural families are receiving help at present through the regional office, which covers the same area as the diocese, from Jindera to Kilmore.
Ms Don Leonard said the new office allowed the agency to expand its programs while complementing the work of other welfare agencies.
Several speakers, including a Salvation Army officer, said the agencies worked together to achieve the best for under-privileged people.
Ms Don Leonard said that apart from some government help for emergency relief, Anglicare relied on the community and non-government resources.
The regional service was furnished entirely by gifts from groups and individuals.
