Grieving family praises kindness

AFTER the heartbreak of losing her husband in a truck crash, a mother of six has thanked the community for their “overwhelming” support.

Amanda Parker has been left amazed at the generosity of the public after donations amounting to $6500.

Dave Parker died while on the job in Queensland when his semi-trailer rolled on the Cunningham Highway, west of Warwick, in April.

On Wednesday Mrs Parker erected a gravestone paid for with the money the public donated, saying: “It’s what Dave deserved”.

“The public support has been amazing, so many people put money into my account,” Mrs Parker said from her husband’s grave site yesterday.

“Because most of the donations were anonymous, I just wanted to do something to thank all of the people that have helped us.

“In the first three or four months since he died the money just kept coming in.”

The gravestone marks the important things in Dave’s life.

It has a picture taken on the day he wedded Mrs Parker and below a loving message: “husband and soul mate of mine. Some love lasts a lifetime, true love lasts forever”.

Mrs Parker said the young family, with children aged from two to 16, have been brave since their father passed away.

“We’re coping OK,” she said.

“It has not been too bad.”

Mr Parker was trapped in the cabin of the truck and he told daughter, Chevon, who was on school holidays, to get out of the truck and call for help.

Warwick man Paul Maher was among the first at the scene and found little Chevon sitting on the embankment.

Mr Parker, formerly Dave James, changed his surname when the couple married in 2005.

They had four children — Maverick, Zharlia, Chevon and Blade.

Mrs Parker also has Jayde and Koden from a previous relationship, while Mr Parker had three sons, Dennis, and twins Keith and Bruce, with an ex-partner.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
