ORGANISERS of yesterday’s Volkswagen exhibition in Albury believe the fledgling meeting could become one of the Border’s biggest car club events.

More than 80 cars were on show at the second V-Dubs in the Square show, held at Hovell Tree Park, well up on last year’s numbers.
Among them was Keith Feil’s yellow 1972 Beetle — now his wife’s “daily driver”. She sold her BMW to own one of the famously quirky cars.
Mr Feil, of Wodonga, was thrilled to find there was a local VW show and believed the Border was an excellent spot to host such events.
“We should encourage more car clubs to have them here,” he said.
Lead organiser Reece White was impressed with the turnout and believed it’s “only going to get bigger”.
“It’s going to get really huge, like the Chryslers on the Murray,” he said.
“People have already marked it in their calendar for next year.”
Mr White puts the interest down to the car’s history, not to mention that VW owners were known to do some “pretty wacky” things to their cars.
Among the Beetles and Kombis, a range of other brands of vehicle entered yesterday’s show and shine competition.
VW owners from Melbourne, Canberra and well beyond attended, including Geelong’s Tony Hunter with his 1960 Kombi.
He bought the van from an 88-year-old neighbour in 2009 — the van had been parked in a garage since 2002.
A condition of the sale was that Mr Hunter restore and keep it.
“We showed it to him when it was done and he sat there, bit of a tear in his eye, and said: ‘I knew I sold it to the right bloke’,” Mr Hunter said.
“I’d never sell it — I could replace the car but you can’t replace the history of it.”
