Les wowed his mates this week with his metre long New Guinea beans from his own vegetable garden.
"There are lots of different ways to eat them," he said.
"It just boils down to how you like to eat your vegetables."
Mr Hawkins said New Guinea beans are generally consumed when the size of a zucchini but left alone could grow up to five-feet long.
"They are a healthy vegetable, I usually slice them up and cook them in butter with a bit of salt, pepper and garlic," he said.
Mr Hawkins, 86, from Wodonga has always had a vegetable garden in his backyard.
"It's the pleasure of creating, you plant a seed and you see it grow into something and you get a bit of pride in saying "I grew that tomato".
"And it makes planning meals much easier.
"I've never done it for the sake of saving money because I honestly I believe by the end of it you don't actually save any money."
